Unmasking Emotions
Recently, I came across this song by Citizen Solider that struck a deep chord with me.
The raw emotion in these lines speaks volumes about the struggle with feeling invisible and the challenge of expressing what lies beneath the surface. As someone who identifies as neurodivergent, I often find myself grappling with feelings that seem too complex to put into words. It's like wearing a mask—an attempt to shield myself from judgment and misunderstanding, while hiding the emotions that weigh heavily on my heart.
The song encapsulates this feeling perfectly: “I built walls so high, so they never even make a sound.” It’s that internal battle we face, where the monsters in our heads scream for attention, yet we feel trapped behind our own barriers. It’s easier to keep it all inside than to face the vulnerability of admitting that we’re not okay.
Art, in its many forms, serves as an incredible outlet for these emotions. It allows us to peel back the layers, drop the mask, and confront our truths without fear of judgment. When we create or engage with art, we give ourselves permission to feel and to express what often feels inexpressible.
Whether it’s writing, painting, or even making DIY projects, art helps us navigate the complexities of our emotions and reminds us that we are not alone in our struggles.
How does music or art help you cope with your feelings? Have you ever felt the need to mask your true self?
💖✨ To all my fellow community members who currently aren't okay: I hear you and I see you. You're not alone.
